The National Youth Indaba brought together young leaders, sector experts and government stakeholders in Boksburg for three days of dialogue and discovery. At the centre was a clear message: young people must play a meaningful role in building a more inclusive and resilientwater sector.

Themed Skills for a Changing World: Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation, the indaba focused on opening doors for youth participation, promoting access to support mechanisms and celebrating innovation.TCTA’s presence was felt across several sessions.

One of the highlights was an interactive session co-facilitated by Tshiamo Legoale. It focused on entrepreneurship and economic empowerment and explored financial and non-financial support available to youth-owned enterprises.

The session gave delegates an overview of compliance requirements involving the South African Revenue Service and the National Treasury. It also introduced tools and partnerships that support business development within the water and sanitation value chain. A mix of institutional insight and personal experience helped keep the discussion focused and relatable.

TCTA interns Shuping Maremane, Felicity Mabelane and Moitheri Modise attended several breakaway sessions on topics including leadership, innovation and access to opportunity. Operations and Maintenance Technician Nkamogeleng Mahlangu, based at AMD, also took part in the programme. Project Naledi coordinator Nomvula Mhlambi said exposure to platforms like the National Youth Indaba supports the professional growth of TCTA’s young staff and encourages them to think about how their skills can benefit the broader community.

Support for the development of young professionals remains vital for a resilient and inclusive water sector in South Africa. The
National Youth Indaba took place in Boksburg from 29 June to 2 July.
