On 20 March 2025, a successful river clean-up at the Centurion Society of Model Engineers set a positive tone for National Water Week. In partnership with the Hennops River Revival, TCTA demonstrated its commitment to preserving South Africa’s freshwater resources as part of the national Clear Rivers campaign. This collaborative effort brought together dedicated staff and local community volunteers who spent the day removing pollution from the Hennops River, reinforcing the importance of environmental responsibility at a time when water security is a pressing global concern.

Marking the official start of National Water Week, which ran from 20 to 25 March 2025, the clean-up event was designed not only as a direct action against pollution but also as a public demonstration of community engagement in environmental stewardship. National Water Week is a highlight of Water Month—an initiative that expands on World Water Day, spearheaded by the United Nations on March 22—which emphasizes the importance of freshwater and advocates for its sustainable management. This year’s World Water Day theme, “Glacier Preservation,” underscores the broader imperative for sustainable freshwater management and links local efforts to global objectives under Sustainable Development Goal 6.
Wanda Mkutshulwa, Senior Manager of Communication and Stakeholders, led the Centurion event, ensuring that every participant understood the impact of their work. She coordinated activities and motivated volunteers to work efficiently, turning a challenging task into an inspiring day of teamwork. Ahead of the week’s series of activities, Socioeconomic Development Officer Florence Ndhundhuma stressed the importance of proactive environmental action.

“These initiatives will not only help preserve our rivers but also foster a stronger sense of teamwork within our organisation. Let’s come together to make a meaningful difference in our communities,” she declared, underscoring a vision of collective responsibility that transcends the event itself.

The Centurion clean-up was the first of several community activities held during National Water Week, with similar events taking place in Pietermaritzburg and the Free State. Although National Water Month has now concluded, the commitment to environmental stewardship endures. TCTA remains guided by the principles of “Water For All” and continues its efforts to build a lasting legacy of sustainable water management, ensuring that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier environment.
