TCTA strengthened its support for water and sanitation education by providing 30 laptops to deserving learners participating in the Department of Water and Sanitation’s Water and Sanitation Education Programme (WSEP).
The laptops were handed over during the programme’s National Adjudication and Awards Ceremony on 30 September, where outstanding schools and learners from across the nine provinces were recognised for their achievements.
The ceremony marked the culmination of this year’s programme, which was officially opened on Sunday, 27 September. Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo hosted the awards ceremony, which brought together learners, educators and partners from across the water sector.
In addition to the laptops, TCTA contributed school shoes, school bags and T-shirts as part of its support for the programme.
TCTA SED Officer Florence Ndhundhuma said providing 30 laptops at one time represented a significant contribution, particularly given the short turnaround time following the request from the department.
“It is the first time that we have provided so many laptops at the same time. The request came at short notice, but with the support of the organisation and assistance from the Procurement team, we were able to make it possible,” she said.
Chief Strategy Officer Pule Mothiba joined the Deputy Minister in handing the laptops to the learners. In his message of support, Mr Mothiba emphasised sustainability and encouraged learners to recognise their responsibility towards future generations.
He reminded them that education provides an opportunity not only to improve their own lives but also to contribute to society and the responsible use and protection of natural resources.
“Today we are giving you bursaries and laptops. Remember that these are not just gifts. We are giving you an opportunity to invest in yourself through education so that you can make the world a better place one day,” Mr Mothiba said.
Established in 1996, WSEP aims to develop learners’ understanding of water and sanitation while encouraging them to become active participants in addressing challenges within their schools and communities.
The programme includes curriculum support, career promotion and educational activities such as Baswa Le Meetse, Aqua Enduro and Public Speaking. These projects progress through district and provincial levels before culminating in national adjudication.
Learners are encouraged to identify water and sanitation challenges in their schools and communities and develop practical solutions. The Department of Water and Sanitation also provides bursary opportunities to outstanding participants who wish to pursue careers in the water sector.
WSEP exposes learners from Grade R to Grade 11 to issues including water-use efficiency, sanitation, water-resource protection, health and hygiene and water safety. It also introduces them to career opportunities in the water sector, contributing to efforts to address scarce skills.
Through its contribution to WSEP, TCTA is helping equip young people with resources that support their education while exposing a new generation to the opportunities available within South Africa’s water sector.
